Experience the magic of the Sahara on a 2-day desert tour from Ouarzazate to Erg Lihoudi near Mhamid El Ghizlane, home to the closest true Saharan dunes from Ouarzazate. This private journey takes you deep into southern Morocco, following ancient caravan routes through palm-filled valleys, historic kasbahs, and breathtaking desert landscapes.
Travel across the rugged Anti-Atlas Mountains, descend into the lush Draa Valley, and discover villages frozen in time. Highlights include camel trekking across golden dunes, a luxury desert camp experience, traditional nomad music under the stars, and cultural visits to pottery workshops and an ancient Quranic library.
Ideal for travelers seeking an authentic yet comfortable Sahara experience, this tour combines adventure, culture, and serenity in just two unforgettable days.
Departure from your hotel in Ouarzazate around 08:30 AM. Travel south across the Tizi-n-Tinfifte Pass in the Anti-Atlas Mountains, passing Berber villages and striking rock formations.
Descend into the Draa Valley, stopping in Agdez to admire its vast palm groves stretching for miles. Continue along ancient caravan routes toward Tinsouline, where you may visit the prehistoric rock engravings of Foum Chenna, dating back over 4,000 years.
Arrive in Zagora for lunch and enjoy views over one of southern Morocco’s largest oases. In the afternoon, continue south to M’hamid El Ghizlane, the last village before the Sahara and the end of the paved road.
From here, switch to a camel trek through the dunes of Erg Lihoudi, arriving at your desert camp in time to watch a spectacular sunset. After dinner, relax around a campfire with Berber drumming and nomad music under a star-filled Saharan sky. Overnight in a luxury desert tent with comfortable beds and a private bathroom.
Note: During extreme summer heat, Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) may be recommended as an alternative.
Wake early to enjoy the sunrise over the Sahara dunes, followed by breakfast at the camp. Enjoy free time for a walk in the dunes before returning by camel or 4×4.
Travel north to Tamegroute, where you’ll visit traditional green-glaze pottery cooperatives and the village’s ancient Quranic Library, home to rare handwritten manuscripts. Explore the covered medina streets before continuing to Kasbah Tamnougalte, the oldest kasbah in the Draa Valley, reflecting centuries of Berber and Jewish history.
Cross the Anti-Atlas Mountains once again and arrive back in Ouarzazate by late afternoon, where your driver will drop you at your hotel.
The best time to visit Morocco’s Sahara Desert is during spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) when the weather is pleasant, with warm days and cool nights. Summer (June–August) can be extremely hot in the desert, while winter (December–February) brings chilly nights, especially in the dunes of Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga.
Yes, having a local driver/guide is highly recommended. The Moroccan desert and Atlas Mountains cover vast, remote areas with complex routes that are difficult to navigate without experience. A guide not only ensures safety and comfort, but also enriches the trip with local knowledge, history, and cultural insights.
We recommend packing:
Comfortable lightweight clothing for the day and warm layers for the cooler desert nights.
A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for sun protection.
Comfortable walking shoes or sandals.
A scarf or turban (cheche) to protect against sun and desert wind.
Personal toiletries and any medications.
A camera to capture the stunning landscapes!
Morocco is a welcoming country with a rich cultural heritage. When traveling, we suggest:
Dress modestly, especially in rural villages.
Always ask before taking photos of locals.
Respect local traditions during Ramadan (avoid eating or drinking in public during fasting hours).
Learn a few words of Arabic or Berber – locals greatly appreciate it.
Bargaining is common in souks, but always done in a friendly manner.
